How to choose the right sunscreen for my skin type?

To choose the right sunscreen, first identify your skin type.

  • For sensitive skin, look for hypoallergenic sunscreens, fragrance-free, with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or plant extracts.
  • For oily skin, opt for lightweight formulas that won’t clog pores, such as mattifying creams or textures designed to control excess sebum.
  • For dry skin, choose creams rich in moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
  • For combination skin, look for balanced formulas that hydrate dry areas while controlling shine in oily zones.
  • For mature skin, protect against aging with creams that provide an effective barrier against UV radiation and contain antioxidants.
  • For acne-prone skin, use sunscreens that won’t exacerbate acne or other imperfections.

Then, depending on your skin tone, you can opt for a higher or lower SPF.

  • People with fair skin will need a sunscreen with SPF 50 for proper protection, while those with olive skin burn more slowly, so they can use a sunscreen with SPF 30.
  • For sensitive areas like the face, neck, and décolletage, it’s best to use a product with the highest SPF, regardless of skin color.

What do the SPF numbers on sunscreen mean, and how do they affect protection?

SPF numbers (Sun Protection Factor) indicate the level of protection against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburns. SPF measures how long you can stay in the sun without getting burned compared to the time it would take for unprotected skin to start reddening. An SPF of 30 filters 96.7% of radiation, an SPF of 50 filters 98%, and an SPF of 15 offers 93% protection against UVB rays. It’s important to choose broad-spectrum sunscreen that also protects against UVA rays, which can cause premature skin aging and other cellular damage.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Lotions and creams should be applied at least 15 minutes before sun exposure to be properly absorbed by the skin and start working on time. Regardless of the SPF you use, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or as needed, especially after swimming, bathing, or towel drying.
